Dear Darkness

Hello Darkness, you return once more,
To whisper of my defeats,
To echo the hollow chambers of my loneliness.
You arrive with a shiver,
A wave of tingling chills upon my skin,
A stark reminder that no blanket’s warmth
Can hide the truth:
I am utterly alone on this desolate path.
Why do you pursue me so brazenly?
Why do you cling to me so fiercely?
Why have you chosen me as your eternal companion,
To drive me mad, to engulf me in your shadow?
Why do you never let go?
Sit beside me, then.
Speak to me.
Tell me stories of your solitude,
Convince me that you need me,
So that we might be friends,
That I might welcome you with open arms
When you inevitably pass my way.
Dear Darkness,
Lay bare your secrets,
And perhaps, in the depths of our shared despair,
We will find a twisted kind of solace,
In the heart of our mutual emptiness.
